ABOUT SWIMRUN

History
Swimrun is a rapidly growing two person team sport which began as a drunken bet in a bar in the Swedish Archipelago off the coast of Stockholm. There are now over 300 swim run races held all over the world with several in the USA.

Process
Swimrun teams start out with a run, transition to a swim and continue to alternate between swimming and running. With the balance between running and swimming, athletes tend to recover much more quickly, have fun and avoid repetitive injuries.

Team Info
Teams include all-male, all-female, and mixed-gender teams and must apply to be considered. We offer a “SOLO” category in the short course.  Participants often swim in their shoes and run in their wetsuits to minimize transition time and gain a competitive edge.

Participation
The race course will consist of alternating overland routes and swim legs within the Fort Yargo State Park. Overland routes will be marked at various points along the course with “turn by turn” signage.  Swim exit points will be designated by flags, banners, and/or volunteers but may not be immediately visible from the swim entry point. Maps of the course will be provided to athletes and will include details from each swim entry point to the corresponding exit point. Basic compass skills are strongly recommended.

Any deviation from the marked course by participants shall be grounds for disqualification.

In this video, Marcus Barton explains what swimrun is all about and how you should get in on this crazy but fun sport. Marcus Barton is an accomplished Swimrun racer including an ÖTILLÖ Swimrun World Championships finisher, 2x winner of Swimrun Virginia, winner of Swimrun North Carolina, winner of Swimrun Catawba, 2nd place finisher of Casco Bay Swimrun and 4th place finisher of Rockman Swimrun in Norway.

RACE DETAILS

Race Support and Safety

  1. Aid stations will be sited at various island locations across the course for fluid replacement and nutrition. Special needs should be carried by the athletes as needed.

  2. Medical personnel will be sited at various island locations and watercraft. Toilet facilities are not available due to the nature of the course, the utmost discretion is expected of athletes. Carry IN/Carry OUT.

  3. Team members must remain together at all times throughout the event and cannot be more than 10yds apart. Use of the tether during the swim is STRONGLY suggested, if team mates are gapped by more than 10yds at anytime, they are subject to disqualification. Race organizers reserve the right to make tether use mandatory as the weather may suggest for safety purposes.

  4. The race organization can refuse a team from continuing if they are judged to be incapable of competing safely due to fatigue or injury.

  5. The race organization reserves the right to cancel the event, alter, shorten, hold-in-place or otherwise change the course at any time as a consequence of weather or other unexpected course conditions beyond their control that may jeopardize the safety of athletes.

  6.  On race day, there is always the potential for extreme or severe weather conditions (lightening, tornado, high winds, extreme hot or cold temperatures, etc.…). In the event of inclement weather due to storms, thunder, lightning, etc., the race may be delayed as race officials consult with public safety officers. If there is more than a reasonable time delay, or if conditions persist, race officials reserve the right to shorten or cancel the race. Entry fees are non-refundable.

If conditions change rapidly, the Army Corps of Engineers and/or RD may require the course to be cancelled or altered. The race officials shall have full discretion to pull any swimmer from the water for safety reasons and to shorten the swimmers course. If danger occurs before the start of the event, the race will be postponed until conditions warrant, or the race will be cancelled. In the event of postponement, a restart will occur at the discretion of the race director.

In the event of this unexpected inclement weather, chain of command will initiate 3 sounds of the airhorn. Swimmers nearest boat will be escorted to shore/drop points based on safe distance at the discretion of the boat operator/safety official onboard, or swimmers will be directed to swim to shore and seek immediate shelter. When conditions are safe to do so, qualified race officials on land or via boat communication will direct swimmers back to HQ, or restart the swim. Every participant MUST be accounted before restarting the swim.

Checkpoints and Cut-offs

  1. Checkpoints will be established that must be reached by a certain time in order to continue racing. Organizers reserve the right to modify these times during the race as conditions require.

  2. A team that has abandoned the race shall report to the nearest checkpoint or race staff as soon as possible.

Athlete Conduct and Responsibilities

  2. At all times, athletes shall be respectful of public and private property owners. Waste shall be disposed at designated aid stations ONLY. Toilet waste paper MUST be disposed of at designated aid stations, please carry appropriate supplies to conform to this provision. Failure to do so shall be cause for disqualification.

  3. Athletes are participating with the full knowledge and acceptance of the risk of injury.

  4. Athlete teams are REQUIRED to stop and offer aid, to the best of their ability, to fellow competitors in need, or as requested by race staff. Failure to do so will be grounds for disqualification without exception or recourse. This is the spirit of SwimRun that all competitors must abide by.
